The SAIS Faculty Research Forum invites you to join Dr. Daniel Markey, Senior Research Professor in International Relations, as he discusses his new book and addresses:
How is China's growing wealth and power affecting Eurasian geopolitics?
and
How should the United States respond to China's growing influence throughout Eurasia?
About the Book: While many new books are explaining China's growing global influence and presence, China's Western Horizon flips the lens to focus on what other states expect and want from China. This includes domestic political-economic aims as well as regional geopolitical ones. The interests and motives of these "lesser" powers will often shape outcomes as much or more than Beijing's grand schemes. The book focuses mainly on three subregions to China's west: South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East, with special attention to Pakistan, Kazakhstan, and Iran. It concludes with a chapter on US policy options and recommendations, some of which are sharply at odds with Washington's current approach.
