A special chemistry exists between the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and its director, the magnificent Italian conductor and "master of musical drama" (The New York Times), Riccardo Muti. Orchestra and maestro visit with three programs that underscore their deep fluency and interpretive clarity in a wide range of repertoire, from the sparkling classicism of the first Viennese School, to weighty Austro-German Romanticism, to a brand new work by a living composer. Highlights include Bruckner's breathtaking Romantic Symphony; Schumann's restless, animated Second Symphony; and a Brahms double feature of Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 on the final day of the residency. Principal clarinetist Stephen Williamson is featured in Mozart’s beloved Clarinet Concerto, a gem of the repertoire; and the orchestra plays a new work by composer-in-residence Elizabeth Ogonek.
