April 15–May 2, 2020 / The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare
by William Shakespeare
directed by Justin Audibert
A WorldStage Production from the UK
For the first time in 25 years, Royal Shakespeare Company returns to Chicago. After thrilling audiences in Stratford-upon-Avon this spring, the RSC’s powerful, reimagined production is a must-see event of the 2019/20 Season. Set in a matriarchal world where women hold all the power, Shakespeare’s fierce, energetic comedy of gender and materialism is turned on its head—offering a fresh perspective on its portrayal of hierarchy and power. In gender-swapping Shakespeare’s story, the usually female roles (such as Katherine and Bianca) are now male characters, played by men, while the usually male roles (Petruchio and Gremio) have become female characters, portrayed by women. By putting the women in charge, the shift in power dynamics sets off an explosive battle of the sexes in this electrically charged love story.
