Love and loss. Rich and poor. Old and new. Reality and delusion. Laughter and tears.

Anton Chekhov's timeless classic "The Cherry Orchard" is a work of beautiful juxtapositions.

Centered around the decking estate of Lyubov Andreyevna and her brother Gayev in turn-of-the-century Russia, this everlasting work goes beyond its original setting and resonates today as truly as ever before.

As the siblings find themselves unable to grasp the reality of an ever-changing Russia, we see the impact these changes make on everyone at this estate, from Lyubov's daughter Anya, to businessman and former peasant Lopakhin, to the aged servant Firs, and everyone in between. Change is inevitable, and it affects each and every one of us in unexpected ways. What better year than 2020 to revisit this age old quandary?

Beyond its plot, each character feels profoundly human and whole. These are people who remind us of a neighbor, a friend, and especially ourselves: from their idiosyncrasies to their yearning for something more. These traits (and people) are in equal parts moving and hilarious: it is little wonder Chekhov and his directing partner Stanislavski could never agree on whether the play was a comedy or tragedy.

Chase What Flies has put its signature spin on this beautiful tale by shedding the usual confines of culture and gender that classical theatre so often mandates. While the play still takes place in turn-of-the-century Russia, our cast is fully representative of the Los Angles community. We cherish the relationships, characters, and text of the past (no gimmicks or conceptual changes) while performing as an ensemble of the present and future. Progressive theatre. Classic words.

Featuring some of LA's premiere Classical Theatre artists, and directed by the team of William Dennis Hunt, Celia Rivera, and Tippi Thomas, CWF's "The Cherry Orchard" is a refreshing, powerful, and poignant black box staging that is not to be missed.
