Presented by internationally prominent author and youth care specialist Charles Appelstein M.S.W. Mr. Appelstein has authored books, CD’s and DVD’s. Including No Such Thing as A Bad Kid: Understanding and Responding to kids with Emotional $ Behavioral Challenges Using a Positive, strength–based Approach & The Gus Chronicles: Reflections from an Abused Kid This 3 hour presentation is primarily for providers who work with children/adult children who have behavior challenges and/or are at risk both in the OPWDD and Mental Health fields. Educators are also welcome!! “No Such Thing As a Bad Kid!”The Power of a Positive, Trauma-Informed, Strength-Based Approach in Reshaping the Lives of At-Risk Kids and Their Families This presentation’s focus is on strength-building rather than flaw-fixing. It begins with the belief that all individuals have strengths and past successes that can be utilized to stop problem behavior and enhance functioning. This uplifting presentation will highlight some of the key principles and techniques of this life-changing, inspiring approach to guiding high-risk young people.This presentation examines the major triggers and provides strategies for self-management that keeps enthusiasm alive, and a new definition for success in working with at-risk populations. How and why to create trauma-informed treatment environments; changing negative mindsets and the deleterious effects of pejorative labeling; strength-based communication principles and techniques – including reframing, using solution-focused questions, positive-predicting, the millimeter acknowledgement, and inspirational metaphors; self-esteem building & activities for at-risk children and youth; how to help cognitively inflexible young people; the importance of being family-friendly; why, how, and when to use incentives; the importance of controlling personal emotions (i.e. managing number one first); core strength-based verbal interventions including de-escalation techniques; respectful, relationship-based limit setting; and a host of creative cognitive behavioral strategies.
