The story is set in 1938 and revolves around a meeting of eight women to discuss what to do about an imminent attack they fear is mounting from the men's ward. Housed in a mental asylum, the women are (or at least believe themselves to be) eight famous figures from history: Gertrude Stein, Susan B. Anthony, Joan of Arc, Queen Isabella I, Osa Johnson, Pearl White, Constanze Mozart, and Amelia Earhart.
