APLD Bay Area District Business Series

The Business of Landscape Design:

Demystifying Online Marketing

A panel of Bay Area landscape designers will discuss why and how to use online marketing channels such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Houzz, Yelp, and more to showcase your work and grow your business.

The Bay Area is home to the world’s largest online marketing platforms— Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Houzz, Yelp, and more—but are you using them effectively to showcase your work and grow your business?

Join a panel of your Bay Area APLD colleagues who are successfully promoting themselves with these modern media. We’ll sort through the myriad channels available, discuss their strengths and shortcomings, and define strategies and tactics you can begin using immediately to boost your business. You’ll leave with a framework for developing your own plan to garner likes, pins, retweets and stars to get more of the clients you value most.

John Black, APLD (@verdancedesign on Pinterest) began designing landscapes in 2002 after more than a decade creating on- and offline marketing communications for Fortune 100 corporations as well as small service businesses. Today he is an award-winning APLD certified designer, registered landscape architect, and principal (and, yes, chief marketing officer) of Verdance Design Group in Palo Alto.

Eileen Kelly (www.digyourgarden.com) developed her fascination with plants as a child in the family garden in New Jersey. After a successful career in advertising and marketing in NYC and SF, she switched careers and formed Dig Your Garden Landscape Design in 2005. Eileen creates artful and functional designs for residences in Marin and the Bay Area and is a contributing writer for Houzz.com, a speaker and an award-winning landscape designer.

Julie Orr (@julieorrdesign on Houzz) has been a landscape designer for the past 14 years. Her specialty is creating outdoor rooms for her clients. Her other passion is designing and selling louvered pergolas to designers, architects and builders, and she currently represents two different high-end pergola companies: Brustor and StruXure. Julie blogs at www.julieorrdesign/learn-more/blog.
Kristen Rudger, APLD (@klrudger on Houzz) is an APLD certified designer and has been principal of Kristen Rudger Landscape Design since 2006. In that time she has helped hundres of homeowners create personalized dream landscapes including everything from swimming pools and hot tubs to outdoor kitchens, fire pits, decks, arbors and custom play spaces. Kristen brings her vast knowledge of horticulture and her keen eye for colorful, comfortable designs to every project she endeavors.
