Folks often ask if I get nervous before a show. I ALWAYS get nervous before a show. Will I have the right words the right story the right rhythm do I even have the right to speak... So, I breathe, review my set list, breathe, make sure my clothes are comfortable, drink water and tea (which make me have to pee), breathe, and give thanks for the opportunity to hold the mic, for the access I have in a creative space, and then I breathe and trust that I am there for a reason. And the rest is improv. I am a Love goddess, and I hope that my truth and words fuel and affirm our stories and greater good. And then I breathe, and give thanks again when it is all done. And then I have a cocktail to celebrate, and exhale. Hope to see you tonight with these fine fellas, at the Poppy. ~sgr

Excited to be back at the Poppy on Friday night, throwing down some verses and jamming with these bad-ass jazz musicians. We have done this a few times now and each time it gets hotter. We hope you will join us, and here is a list poem, reflecting my take on NuyoRican poetry, to get you in the mood... RicanStruction (by Sandra Garcia Rivera) A 15 round bout between Pedro & Piri while Papo smokes a jay at ringside. Domino towers under a hazy Bronx sky at sunrise, sofrito tongues tie Obsession, piss and pork in banana leaf guaguanco, tecato trees lean towards the street, uproot, swing through the garden gate, cracked concrete, frozen fire hydrants, subway grates, a hop- scotch drop between bullets and cherry blossom flight, beef patties, a pizza slice, your Titi’s thighs, staircase sighs, alcapurrias, chicken wings, razor stubble neck sweat, goatee wearing, head wrap rocking ghetto chic, cowry shells and French tip nails, bacalao swimming under apartment doors sticking to plaster walls, el Super que nunca pase el mapo, a crutch a spear, arrow and bastón, Lavoe y el negro bembón, Ramito y la verde rama Run back alley troubadour decimation, lined lips, pen tips, mango, olive, coffee spit, tembandumba de la quimbamba, head spins, parole, electric boogie, heart, beat, & sol.
