Well-respected international ikebana teacher Soho Sakai began practicing the ancient Japanese art and discipline of ikebana in 1957 in Kumamoto, Japan. As a longtime Bouquets to Art exhibitor and presenter, Sakai will discuss the relationship between ikebana, nature, and the floral designer, exploring how the designer creates beauty with feelings.
This program features a 1 ½ hour flower arranging presentation and conversation with Soho Sakai. At the conclusion of the presentation, guests will have the opportunity to win one of Sakai's bouquets through a raffle.

Inspired by works of art in the de Young museum’s galleries, Bouquets to Art is a weeklong display of floral installations, offering new ways of seeing the permanent collection. While the galleries are blooming, the museum hosts an Opening Night event and a series of luncheons, raffles, and demonstrations with renowned guest speakers.

Soho Sakai, a native of Japan, began practicing the ancient Japanese art and discipline of Ikebana in 1957 in Kumamoto, Japan. What started as a bridal training has turned into a deep passion and way of life for Soho. She received her teachers’ Diploma from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in 1961, just prior to coming to the United States.
Soho attended the University of California Berkeley Extension in 1975 to obtain an adult Education teaching credential. In addition to receiving a lifetime California Adult School teaching credential in 1976 and a California Community College teaching credential in 1980, she holds the prestigious title of RIJI, the highest teaching rank of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana.
