We love to hate villains, but entertainment certainly wouldn’t be the same without them. They are the necessary evil that defines every hero, but what exactly is a villain? Hear from a TV critic, an academic and a comic book writer for a night all about villains.

BostonTalks is WGBH’s smarter happy hour. It’s smarter because we feature speakers, and it’s happy hour because we offer a variety of affordable beer, wine and cider.

Featured speakers:

Matthew Gilbert
Boston Globe TV Critic

Matthew Gilbert is a TV critic at The Boston Globe and has interviewed authors such as David Foster Wallace, and Richard Ford, in addition to movie stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep. In addition to being an author and a guest lecturer, Gilbert’s work has appeared in many other newspapers and magazines across the country.

Frankie Vanaria

Doctoral Student at Boston University

Frankie Vanaria is a Boston University Ph.D. student specializing in Hollywood cinema and film theory. He is particularly interested in the work of Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who won the 2018 Academy Award for Best Director for the movie The Shape of Water.

Matt Dursin

Host and Founder for the League of Ordinary Gentlemen Comic Book Podcast

A comic book lover and writer, Matt Dursin is the host of a podcast about comic books, movies, video games and more. He is the author of the new comic book Robin Hood: Outlaw of the 21st Century. His all-time favorite villain? The Joker.

Hosted by Edgar B. Herwick III

WGBH’s Curiosity Desk

Edgar digs a little deeper into topics in the news, explores the off-beat, and searches for answers to questions in the world around us. His radio features can be heard on 89.7 WGBH’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and his television features can be seen on WGBH’s Greater Boston.

You must be at least 21 with a valid ID to attend. Beer, wine and hard cider is available for purchase.

This is a networking-style event. Limited seating will be available.
