Music Play is a chance for children to experience an abundant and varied musical environment. Just as we immerse our children in the sounds of our spoken language from before birth and on, children can benefit similarly from an immersion in a variety of musical sounds.
Music, similar to language, is sequentially learned through a series of vocabularies: listening, speaking, thinking, reading, and writing. As children are exposed to a variety of songs and chants in a variety of tonalities and meters, they begin to develop these vocabularies. We do this quite naturally when it comes to language, but musical guidance is often much less purposeful.
In a Music Play class, children will respond to music in a variety of ways in accordance with where they are in their musical development. Some children will do absolutely nothing; they simply absorb. Others will respond randomly or with some perceived purpose. As children develop they will start to realize how their responses differ from what is expected and start to become more self-aware.
Throughout the class, children will hear songs and chants performed and often accompanied by a movement or game. Parents are encouraged to participate as much as they feel comfortable. Singing, chanting, and moving along with the teacher is very welcome!

Music Play is taught by Mark Goho, BME, M.Ed.
Mark Goho has been teaching music since 2007, starting in public school, and moving soon after to private and homeschooling groups. Mark received his certification to teach along with a Bachelor’s of Music Education from SUNY Fredonia in 2007. With the birth of his first daughter, Anneliese, Mark became very interested in early childhood music development.
In 2011, Mark began graduate work at the University at Buffalo. The program at UB specialized in early childhood music development and instruction and introduced him to the world of Music Learning Theory, first introduced to the world by Dr. Edwin Gordon in the early 1970s at UB.
Working alongside experts in the field of learning theory for newborns and young children, Mark’s interest and passion in the field grew exponentially. In 2013, he earned his Masters in Education from UB, with a specialization in early childhood development for children ages birth through five. He currently teaches music classes for a homeschooling cooperative in Pittsford and guides his (now) three daughters through the types and stages of preparatory audiation.
