Developing classrooms alive with purpose, engagement, and learning means teaching students to interact with texts and with each other as they immerse in a process of meaning making. This two-day symposium offers participants an opportunity to construct, refine, and extend their own professional understandings of balanced literacy as they think, talk, and envision instruction that builds on where we are and moves toward bigger possibilities.

As participants work with colleagues and other literacy leaders, they will explore ideas such as:

• What is the relationship between purposeful talk and construction of meaning?
• What role do read aloud, shared reading, and guided reading play in this learning?
• What might a schedule look like that provides meaningful connections among learning experiences?
• What is the role of formative assessment in a balanced literacy classroom in a time of high-stakes testing and standards?
• How can the classroom teacher support all learners to meet the challenges of today’s expectations and standards?
• How might shared and interactive writing support our youngest learners to further develop their literacy understandings?
• How does this work come together in Spanish-speaking classrooms and dual language classrooms?
• How can literacy leaders support classroom teachers to make the most of a learning environment?
• What becomes possible for our students when they learn in richly dialogic classrooms?
