Austin Icons of the Eighties
Austinites, young and old, are always seemingly nostalgic and longing for the "Old Austin." Bill Leissner audaciously captures the still essence of the characters that make up exactly that era in his new and upcoming book, "Austin Icons of the Eighties: Music, Theatre, Politics," which is scheduled for publication in Spring 2019 by Waterloo Press, the imprint of the nonprofit organization Austin History Center Association.
This special event held to underwrite printing costs for Bill's book includes live local musical performances by Jesse Sublett, Gretchen Phillips, Larry Seaman, Randy Franklin, Monte Warden, Eric Hisaw, and Ben Livingston, theatre monologues from the original cast members, Janelle Buchanan, Joy Cunningham, Gene Fowler, Amparo Garcia-Crow, and Tim Mateer, of the legendary stage production of “In the West,” a book reading by Isabella Russell-Ides from her new novel “White Monkey Chronicles,” and a silent auction featuring a selection of Bill Leissner’s photographs, dining coupons, as well as other iconic memorabilia and pieces from other talented artists, all at the infamous Esther's Follies on Sixth Street and is a night no Austinite should miss! Not only is it guaranteed to bring the community together for an evening full of fun, laughter, and endless entertainment, it is also a night of fundraising to support Bill in his publication process and learn a bit about Austin’s cultural history!
Bill Leissner shot over 100,000 photos in the 1980’s, including many Austin music, theatre, and political icons such as Ann Richards, Jake Pickle, Joe Ely, Willie Nelson, Randy “Biscuit” Turner, numerous Big State Productions projects, and many, many more. He is also believed by many to be the inventor of the “selfie.”
All are welcome - No cover charge - Donations will be requested during the event - Cash bar available - Free street parking or paid parking at Convention Center Garage
