"As Caged Birds" is a recital of contemporary vocal chamber music, all in English, to be presented with visual art by Mollie Komins. The works will take on issues of identity, humanity, and connection through art and love. We hope you will join the conversation!

Mezzo-soprano Claire Galloway Weber will sing Judith Weir's "The Voice of Desire" & baritone Brad Testerman will present selections by Samuel Barber, both with collaborative pianist John Henderson.

Together, with string quartet, they will present excerpts from Laura Kaminsky's chamber opera "As One" which follows a transgender woman through her journey to becoming herself.

PLAN YOUR VISIT:
Parking - there is some street parking in the area but a great bet is the Baltimore Street Garage at 15 Guilford Ave, Baltimore, MD 21202. They do not close!

Entrance: The entrance to the War Memorial building is on the North side of the building (to the left when facing the stairs) on Lexington Street, just past the cannon (yes really!).

Accessibility: There is an elevator for those who cannot, or prefer not, to take the stairs!

Today, March 31st is International Transgender Day of Visibility. There is still a long way to go for transgender people to feel comfortable being themselves in modern society. In Laura Kaminsky's "As One" the movement called "Out of Nowhere" documents a near attack on the protagonist and her "before" voice spends a huge portion of the music listing names of transgender people who have been killed because of who they are. Consider supporting our concert so that we can showcase the story of so many and continue the conversation on how to be not only comfortable in who we each are, but safe, as every single person should be in the world. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/as-caged-birds-music/x/14974980
