GENRE BENDING GENDER HACKING
Paul B. Preciado, curator of Shu Lea Cheang’s Venice Biennale 2019 entry 3x3x6, writes in the exhibition catalogue that “Cheang does with Internet technologies what Pasolini did with film, and Kathy Acker with literature: turn a medium against itself only to reconnect it with political history and social agency. In doing so, the post-Internet digital avant-garde, to which Cheang belongs, challenges the aesthetics of Internet global capitalism and the politics of identity construction fueled by social media and exploited by marketing and political control alike. “ - Dissident Interfaces: Shu Lea Cheang’s 3x3x6 and Digital Avant Garde.
Shu Lea Cheang reflects on her eventful trajectory of bending, hacking genres and genders in her cross-disciplinary art practices. Engaged in media activism and video installation in the 80s and 90s in New York City; migrated to cyberspace in mid-90s; relocated to Eurozone in early 21 century; retreated to BioNet since 2009, setting her narrative time between year 2030-2060; Cheang recounts her noted works: BRANDON (1998-1999, The Soloman R. Guggenheim Museum commission and collection) ; 3x3x6 (2019, mixed media installation at Venice Biennale) and UKI, an interruptive cinema, her current work in development with a CNC/DICRéAM grant in France.
Shu Lea Cheang is an artist/filmmaker whose work aims to redefine genders, genres, and operating structures. As a net art pioneer, her Brandon (1998-1999) was the first web art commissioned by New York's Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Her films Fresh Kill (1994), I.K.U. (2000), and Fluidø (2017) defined their own genres of queer sci-fi cinema: ecocybernoia, sci-fi cyberpunk, and sci-fi cypherpunk. Cheang takes on viral love and bio hacking in her current work. Her mixed media installation, 3x3x6, was exhibited at Venice Biennale 2019, representing Taiwan. She is currently working on UKI, an interruptive cinema, through a CNC/DICRéAM grant.
