When we see statistics presented in the media, it can be hard to know what to trust. It can be equally hard to know how to present our own statistics, so we don’t generate that same confusion for others.
In this session, the DHSC Statistical team will highlight some of the most common mistakes that we see in news stories about statistics. Without going into hard sums and formulae, it will help you to uncover when a story might be stretching the truth, or avoiding it altogether!
We hope this will give participants a good introduction to the critical appraisal of evidence: how to weigh up evidence and decide which items to trust.
