Advanced Sewing Techniques offers seasoned sewers an opportunity to learn and use a variety of advanced trade secrets to enhance their original designs. This class starts with an inspirational tour of Atlanta's Botanical Gardens to offer the students the opportunity to study designs in nature. Each designer will garner direct inspiration from colors, shapes and textures found in nature. The student will then create and finalize the garment design. They will make the pattern. A test and full fashion garment is required.

Throughout the class, tips and instruction will be given to help the student complete a one-of a kind piece that will be displayed at the end of the course. Students may choose to make one of the following garment types:

  1. A formal gown
  2. A tailored jacket
  3. A multi-layered day dress

Materials for these projects can vary. Half-scale fashion tests will be demonstrated. Cost sheets will be given after all designs are finalized. Students will also be introduced to specialized tools to facililate with some of the techniques used in the class. Please click the "supply room" button of our website.

Basic supplies:

  1. sketch book
  2. graphite pencils
  3. eraser
  4. pencil sharner
  5. color pencils or markers
  6. notebook
  7. sheet protectors
  8. sewing tools and supplies
  9. portable sewing machine
  10. fashion fabrics
  11. muslin test fabric
  12. trim (if applicable)
  13. tape

Students may opt to use traditional hardcopy, CAD or a combination of both patternmaking methods to complete their projects. However, for CAD patterns, students will need their laptops and TukaDesign rental software.

By the end of this class, the student will have been given the opportunity to enjoy the entire fashion design process without the stress of the industry and hopefully be encouraged to tackle many more original designs of their own with sucess.
