This former pharmacist uses her extensive knowledge of chemistry to create beautiful soaps. Meet the Maker: Rhonda Frye of Get Lathered Soap Company I got hooked on soapmaking with the first batch I made--what started as a casual hobby soon became a near-obsession! It is the perfect fusion of science and artistic process. I love the challenge of formulating soap and other products to have specific qualities using my professional background as a pharmacist. The next step is the creative challenge--developing and using decorative techniques to give the products creative flair. And don't forget the wonderful fragrances ---Ahhhhhhh! I love that the resulting products indulge our senses with great fragrances, beautiful appearances, and rich tactile satisfaction along with wonderful functionality. And I get the most pleasure from seeing people enjoy my products.

Do you wear lots of hats? So has photographer Debra Jarvis. Meet the Maker: Debra Jarvis of Designs by DJ Debra Jarvis has filled many roles - photographer, fire chief, teacher, consultant, mentor, wife, stepmother, sister, aunt, church administrator, community volunteer and board member, church member, race relations facilitator, and more. But she is really a child of God, whose purpose is to be the possibility of unity in the world. Her photography artwork is one means to that end. The vastness of creation has always fascinated Debra, especially the environment and the people who live, work, and play here. Over the past 30 years she has captured North American rural and city scenes in stunning photographs. Now, with digital technology, she has honed in on some of her favorite images in a new, fresh way that delights the eye. Her hope is that the artwork will unify people by providing opportunities to talk with each other about how we can live together in peace and preserve our world, so subsequent generations will continue to experience the wonder and beauty of this amazing Planet Earth

Are you ready to just go 'whoa!'? A layoff led to this jeweler striking out on his own. Don't miss the drool worthy work of Matthew Breunig this Saturday at the 9th Hoosier Artisan Boutique Meet the Maker: Matthew Breunig of Jewelry by Matt Breunig After years spent working for a large corporation, and endless ring sizings, Matt found himself part of a company wide bench jeweler layoff in 2010. The layoff turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It was just the push he needed to strike out on his own. With the help of his wife, he started a Facebook page which led to selling on Etsy. Matt and his wife started selling at festivals the summer of 2012. Matt has found more inspiration than ever from new customers, old friends and family members. Each piece that Jewelry by Matt sells is handmade by Matt in his basement shop.

Meet the Maker: Rachel Hedges of BEBITO Rachel Hedges has been making her quirky and creative plush toys, accessories and decorative items in Indianapolis since 2006. She likes to create from incidental discoveries; a vintage skirt, an old-fashioned button collection, a found flower, an unintended play on words. A main focus of her work is re-using lost or rejected items, and giving them a new chance at life. Rachel spends a lot of time thinking about, planning and creating Bebito items. But at other times, she is also a bartender, a singer and guitar player, a raw food enthusiast, a run/swim/biker, a poet, and a cat-sitter. The BEBITO Studio and Gallery is located inside the Circle City Industrial Complex, on the Near East Side of Downtown Indianapolis. We are open on the first Friday of Every month, or by request.

Local Noblesville, Indiana resident Darlene Patterson returns for the 9th Hoosier Artisan Boutique this Saturday. Meet the Maker: Darlene Patterson of Patterson Pottery Being an avid nature lover, this theme has a way of creeping into my work. The patterns and colors that I chose are a direct reflection of the subject matters and palettes that mother nature provides. I find that as I walk about the woods and paddle on the rivers and streams in Indiana, or someplace exotic in the world, I am always searching for ways to use what I observe in my work. Recently, I paddled with friends on the Turkey River in Iowa where Earth clay was discovered in the river bank. What fun it was to dig a sample and carry it home to throw on the wheel and turn into a bowl. After firing, it became a precious memory piece. When you put your hands on clay, the medium records your touch. I hope that when you touch my pottery, you will feel the joy that I felt when creating it.

Our makers are deeply invested in our community and in causes they feel strongly about. Meet the Maker: Tina Polk of Daipur Designs in Indianapolis, Indiana Our mission at DaiPur Designs is to inspire and encourage women from different walks of life. People are faced with several adversities throughout life and some days it's hard to be the best YOU! I too face many adversities in life and one is dealing with my sleeping disorder. This neurological condition is difficult for most to comprehend because you can't see a physical impairment. Because of my struggles, I choose to inspire and encourage women who are living with an invisible health condition and women who are just "going through!" Tina launched #SHESINVISIBLE, a website and blog to encourage and inspire women living with invisible health conditions because she wants to build a community of women that help each other!

DO you take joy in surrounding yourself with well crafted, original art that is functional and not just decorative? Don't miss the weavings of Marcos Bautista at the 9th Hoosier Artisan Boutique Meet the Maker: Marcos Bautista My name is Marcos Bautista, and I have been a weaver for as long as I can remember. Originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, weaving rugs and tapestries from sheep's wool is an art that has been passed down through the generations of my family for hundreds of years. The pieces I weave are inspired by ancient Zapotec traditional designs, images fom nature, and modern lifestyles. I am now adding bags, purses, wallets, and pillow cases to our catalog of designs. I moved to Indiana to live with my wife, a native Hoosier, and start my business here; I am now proud to call this place home. I am dedicated to sharing the beauty of the ancient weaving traditions and designs of my people.

A tremendous amount of time, dedication and love go into each accessory created by Janie Bruns of Coat of Many Colors Alpacas in Shelbyville. Meet the Maker: I am a retired educator pursuing my second career as an artist. After moving to a small farm in the country , my husband and I decided to add alpacas to our menagerie of cats, dogs and chickens. I have fallen in love with these sweet, gentle creatures and their amazing, beautiful fiber! As I learned to care for these animals and their fiber, I became very interested in the process of wet felting, nuno felting, and needle felting. With the exception of shearing, I complete each step of the process of taking raw fiber from the animal's back and making it into a finished product. This includes skirting (removing vegetation and debris), washing and drying, carding, and hand dyeing the fiber. There is a tremendous amount of satisfaction in completing each step of the process myself. Most importantly, it means a lot to me to utilize fiber from alpacas that I own and raise. Each item I produce is a unique, one of a kind, piece of art that I can relate directly to the alpaca whose fiber it contains! For me, it truly is a labor of love for the art and the animals that provide my medium.

Felicia started making fleece cloques when she fell in love with one while on vacation and couldn't find anything similar near home. Meet the Maker: Felicia Ferguson of Simple and Pretty I hand make simple and pretty fleece outerwear for women and girls. They are all made from Polartec fleece. This fleece comes in wonderful colors, is washable and does not fray or pill. There are many different variations and colors of The Cloque (capes) and The Kique (ponchos), all of which can be worn from casual to dressy. They are amazingly soft and warm and can be worn to surprisingly low temperatures.

A cherished memory led to a lifelong love of rocks for returning 9th Hoosier Artisan Boutique participant Kittie Kubacki of Oh My Jewelry. Meet the Maker: Kittie Kubacki As a child, I had a love of stones. My father was a big game hunter that would visit very remote areas of the West every year. As he would be hiking through the mountains, he would pocket anything that he thought I might find interesting. Always, his present to me on his return was a pocketful of rocks. To another small girl, this might seem like the ultimate punishment. I couldn’t have been happier! Thus, my love of geology began. It has increased in fervor throughout the years. Now, I combine my love of travel to the process. I attend International gem and mineral shows to purchase all of my material. I carefully handpick every single item that goes into my jewelry. I find the most unique and exotic materials and combine them in a way that makes every piece totally different from anything you will ever see.
-- 19/11/2017 23:51
Kittie, I have a bracelet I think I got from you several years ago that got caught on a heavy tote I was carrying and the clasp broke. If I remember to bring it with me, could I leave it with you for repairs? It's such a beautiful creation and I have no clue how to repair something like it.
