THE PERFORMERS:
“Jonathan Byrd swings from the roots of American music...He jumps between gutbucket blues and tender ballads, empathetic work laments and sympathetic character studies...Byrd shares the often-missed, always poignant tales of the small people that make this world such a big place.” — Grayson Currin, The Independent

"Jonathan Byrd and The Pickup Cowboy are musical gunslingers, vaudevillian hucksters, and old-fashioned tent revivalists. Between heartbreaking ballads and hell-raising sing-alongs, the Cowboys entertain and get audiences involved in the show."
We are so fortunate to get to present Jonathan and Johnny in this small, intimate listening room environment. I have worked with Jonathan several times at jaw-dropping concerts in larger Greensboro venues. Each concert is a unique experience and feeds the soul. Jonathan and his guitarist, The Pickup Cowboy, Johnny Waken, are astoundingly talented musicians and charismatic, energetic performers. Jonathan is among the most respected and adored songwriters in the country. His roots in North Carolina have been growing since 1795, and his songwriting reflects a deep understanding of the many facets of growing up Southern with a musician mother and an alcoholic preacher Dad. He's a family man, a Gulf War veteran, and an award-winning songwriter. He is masterful with words, poetry, and lyrics. He can bring you to the edge of your seat with his stories, and to the edge of tears and laughter with his lyrics - intelligent, poignant and deeply moving. He & Johnny thrill every audience with their amazingly energetic performances and leave us all understanding more and yearning to know more at the same time.

"Multi-instrumentalist Johnny Waken cut his teeth on electric guitar in Pittsburgh with rock legend Norm Nardini, opening for The Blues Brothers Band on their Red, Hot & Blue tour in 1992. On stage and after hours, he jammed with members of Bon Jovi and the legendary Steve Cropper. At the age of 24, Waken left music to pursue primitive skills and through-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2000 with an eleven-pound pack. Returning to music years later Johnny joined theatre troupe Paperhand Puppet Intervention, contributing to scores for nine shows and winning 4 Indy Awards for best original music."

I have removed the stage for this performance, fearing that Jonathan would have to stoop to avoid bumping his head on the ceiling, while Johnny Waken would both jump through the ceiling and plummet through the stage during his kinetic performance trance. So we will have a different seating configuration for this concert, with the stage area on solid flooring.
