Become a citizen scientist plant observer for The 606!

The Trust for Public Land is looking for community members who want to volunteer to observe, record, and report on plants that make up The 606 park and trail landscape. In other words, practice phenology, the science of the seasons that notes, for example, when birds migrate, insects emerge, and plants leaf out and flower.

Volunteers will learn how to conduct plant observations, record data, and share their observations about the plants of The 606 as part of Environmental Sentinel—the trail-wide, plant-based living data visualization and artwork, designed by The 606's lead artist, Frances Whitehead.

Interested?  Ideal volunteer candidates love walking outdoors in all seasons, are available to make regular visits to The 606, and are interested in collecting and sharing information about the plants of The 606.

 Expectations for phenology volunteers:

  • Register for and attend one training workshop February 24 OR March 3

  • Conduct weekly plant observations of a section of The 606 from March through November 2018, –roughly one -two hours/week time commitment

  • Record observations using USA-National Phenology Network/ Nature's Notebook protocols and data sheets—requires access to a computer with internet connection

  • Participate in volunteer check-ins and share feedback to help us grow the program.

If you're pretty sure you can meet these expectations, we'd love to have you attend a phenology training workshop.
