The Illinois Association for Play Therapy is excited to offer a two-day training opportunity for mental health therapists and graduate students featuring Linda Homeyer Ph.D., LPC-S, and RPT-S . CEs will be available for Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Social Workers, and Play Therapy with 6 CEs offered for each day of attendance. Day 1: Play to Words: Understanding Play Therapy Case Documentation

Description

Playing may be the cure, but words are the record. Come explore the world of play therapy documentation from intake through termination. Best practice issues will be explored. Discussion of the importance of what is written (and not). Focus will be given to understand the dynamics of a play session and how to translate the play into professional clinical words. Case examples and templates will be shared.

Learning Objectives

  • List the components of a play therapy client file
  • Develop one’s own checklist of play therapy specific clinical forms from intake through termination
  • Discuss decision making process for inclusion or exclusion of case information
  • Deconstruct a play therapy session, identify the clinical process by one’s theoretical approach, and write succinct clinical notes
  • Identify documenting working with parents: treatment plans and ongoing feedback
  • Discuss awareness of APT Best Practices as relates to professional legal and ethics.

Day 2: Trauma-Informed Sandtray Therapy for the Play Therapist

9:00 AM - 4:00 PM | CE Hours: 6

Description

This workshop will provide play therapists an exploration of trauma-informed dynamics to ones’ ongoing play therapy work with clients of all ages, importance of integrating with counseling/personality theory, and client conceptualization. The focus will be integrating and conceptualizing the three stages of trauma-informed therapy work as play therapist’s use the sand tray. This includes use and importance of how the play therapist can use the “trauma narrative,” “life narrative,” and “family narrative” as a part of successful treatment. We will also explore the inclusion of spirituality/religion as a possible resource for trauma victims and their families. Case studies and examples will be given. Participants: Please bring 15-20 miniature figures with you. We will experience and play, too!

Learning Objectives

  • The play therapist will identify how using sand, sand tray, and miniature figures can assist client’s ability to co-regulate in play therapy sessions
  • List trauma-related miniature figures, both symbols of fear and symbols of safety
  • Assess and use spiritual/religious issues as a resiliency factor in play therapy trauma-treatment
  • The play therapist will discuss trauma, impact of ACE studies, and trauma-informed practice in sand tray
  • List the three steps of trauma work and how the play therapist can use this information in their play therapy process
  • Identify how to integrate the trauma narrative and life narrative in facilitative play therapy responses

About the Speaker

Linda E. Homeyer, Ph.D., LPCS, RPT-S, is a Retired Professor of Professional Counseling at Texas State University, where she developed their play therapy and sandtray therapy programs. Dr. Homeyer is the recipient of the Association for Play Therapy’s Lifetime Achievement Award and designated as a Director Emerita. She presents locally to internationally on play therapy and sandtray therapy, has numerous publications, including: Sandtray Therapy: A Practical Manual (3 rd Ed.), and The Handbook of Group Play Therapy, co-authored and co-edited with Daniel Sweeney, respectively. Her publications have been translated into Chinese, Russian, Korean, and Spanish. Dr. Homeyer is the director of the Door of Hope Counseling Center in New Braunfels.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Just a few miles west of Chicago’s Loop, in beautiful and historic downtown Oak Park, The Nineteenth Century Club is located on Forest Ave, just one half block from Lake Street and is within walking distance of the Green Line. A large public parking garage is adjacent to the Club for a reasonable price.

We have reserved a block of rooms at The Carleton of Oak Park Hotel.
