This is very cool: Someone contacted us to say she had lost her camera at the Peace Lantern Ceremony. We had it. She and a friend just came over to retrieve it — and spent an hour cleaning off our lantern bases! We now have only about 450 remaining to clean before Sunday, when we are hoping to put them into storage (if they are dry by then). If you are interested in coming by for an hour to scrape off candle wax and wipe down surfaces in the next three days, we will be thrilled to have your help. Sign up at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/508094aaea922a7fe3-postevent Thanks for the help today, Christine and Isaac!

So lovely and very spiritually good. Sorry I couldn't make it. Am getting ready to move to Mexico and am overloaded with projects and duties. Will try to make it before Sunday to help clean up lanterns.

Thanks to Florie for spending more than three hours today cleaning off lantern bases! We have hundreds to go, but fewer hundreds than before.

Volunteers did it all -- transformed this beautiful event from an idea to a reality. We are having a combination celebration party and put-things-away day Sunday. If you are on our volunteer list you have received an invitation by e-mail. If you didn't get the e-mail and are interested, or would like to stop by and help clean and dry lantern bases this week before Sunday, write to info@peacelanterns.org and we'll hook you up. どうもありがとうございます — thank you so much!

Not sure if this posted earlier so trying again...Thanks so much to the organizers of last night's event. My friend and i really enjoyed it. We ended up helping to light and launch the lanterns which made it even more meaningful. So nice to see so many families there for peace.... great job, you are much appreciated!

I don't know about you guys but last night lantern festival was a big letdown for me and my friends. We thought it would be a very mesmerizing scene but it turned out like some cheap budget b movie. Won't come back next year.

Hi, Darren. Can you say more about what made it that way for you? Several of us were feeling a lot of attendees were there to hang out on a Saturday night, wandering around with their faces in their phones, unwilling to yield their chairs to let others sit and decorate lantern shades. But I wonder whether you're referring to anything about how we, the organizers, set it up, versus the attendees. Would love your thoughts, e-mailed to info@peacelanterns.org or here on FB. Thanks.

I have to agree with Darren. I came from Stockton with my wife and I saw many youths not on their fun, but however many youths with their camera. My wife with her Canon EOS Rebel T7i and Leica APO-Telyt-R 1:5.6/1600mm lenses only saw algae. I thought it was a festival, but our 4 kids was happy. We were glad to take many dog photos.

I had great hopes, but I was deceived by your cover photo on the event page. The highlight of the night were all the dogs attendees brought. I'd encourage others to bring more next year. Please understand Darren, I and others share similar opinions, but we are the only ones to voice them.

I met several nice people as we waited for the launching of the lanterns. The event was well organized and run and handled the crowds well. Parking across the freeway was a great suggestion for getting in and out. Most attendees near me were families and couples and were quiet and respectful. However a group of young men and women surrounded a few of us standing near a railing on the north end and shouted loudly to each other and pushed up against us while we were trying to take photographs. I had a tripod and it got bumped several times. We asked them to please move back; however they would not. It was the only down side to the otherwise peaceful ceremony.

Beautiful evening, thank you organizers! After 16 years, this event never loses its impact. It has grown enormously over the past couple of years, and it's wonderful to see so many generations of people come together in the name of world peace. With so much interest in the community and such robust attendance, the organizers have risen to the occasion admirably.

I thought that would be so neat unless a gazillion peeps show up... it would be beautiful in the dark. William Shatner, Terry Bradshaw, George Foreman and Henry Winkler did this on a tv show while the 4 of them visited Japan.

fyi... I walked the Bolivar path about two weeks ago. The entire water surface was covered with yellow algae. There is some clear water further down Bolivar beyond the kids park.

Hi, Tamara. We have been to the park several times since then. The City has been very helpful about this, having skimmed the lagoon several times in the past week, including two days ago. We expect no problems.

If we haven't already registered, can we not come? Or is the registration just over?
Bay Area Japanese Peace Lantern Ceremony, Aquatic Park, Berkeley
-- 05/08/2017 14:39
We stopped accepting registrations last night because (1) we are getting immense numbers relative to the space in Aquatic Park, and (2) we are currently not able to process the number of registrations coming in. Registration is not required. Folks who plan to attend should avoid driving if at all possible, unless they are disabled, are volunteers, or have a paid reserved space in the parking lot (which is sold out). If you must drive, see directions on our Getting There page (linked below) for parking WEST of I-80/I-580. That page also has info about transit and has two drop-off addresses for ride services. You might also park at a farther-away BART station (North Berkeley, MacArthur, Rockridge) and take BART to downtown Berkeley, then bus or walk to the park. (Transit destination listed on our Getting There page.) Please also see our What-To-Bring page (second link below). See you tonight! http://www.peacelanterns.org/location--getting-there http://www.peacelanterns.org/what-to-bring

I'm looking at a receipt here for $146.90 in supplies we needed to purchase this morning unexpectedly, part of our effort to keep up with the huge attendance expected tomorrow. This makes me grateful that people are still donating online to help cover costs we incur before the event. You are welcome to join them: http://peacelanterns.org/donate

Got this from the organizers: (for those who can attend) The 16th annual Bay Area Peace Lantern Ceremony is this Saturday, Aug. 5, 6:30–9 p.m. at the north end of Aquatic Park in Berkeley. We expect it to be extremely crowded. To help everything run safely and smoothly, please be mindful of the following information. PLEASE AVOID DRIVING TO THE EVENT: Transportation and parking maps/info: http://www.peacelanterns.org/location--getting-there.html. If you must drive, please park west of I-580/80 along University Avenue or in the Berkeley Marina parking lots, and use the pedestrian overpass to enter the park. Exceptions: Disabled/senior parking, follow signs to enter park on Bancroft. Volunteers, see instructions sent to you. RESERVED PARKING: If you have purchased a reserved spot in the nearby lot, enter the park via Bancroft, turn right, go to the lot entrance (where the road is closed). The lot will be open at 5 p.m. and the parking-lot gate will lock automatically at 10:15 p.m., so you will need to be out of the lot by then. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Several positions are not yet filled. Want to be part of the team? See: http://peacelanterns.org/volunteer. COSTS NOT YET COVERED: The event is free, and we provide all materials. We invite you to contribute toward the costs: and/or at the check-in tables at the event (cash only). Donors have covered most costs that must be paid beforehand, but we will still need to pay for the truck rental, rented tables and chairs, sound engineers, and several other expenses. For on-site donations we'll have some thank-you gifts: a tee-shirt for a $30 donation, four beautiful notecards for a $15 donation. SCHEDULE AND ACTIVITIES: See http://peacelanterns.org WHAT TO BRING: Your food and water (beverages/snacks available from Waterside Workshops café). Wear warm clothes in layers (mid-70s daytime, chilly and windy at dusk). A flashlight. If you can lend a battery-powered table lamp, please bring it for one of our tables (labeled with your name and contact info). Take a minute to check out our what-to-bring page: http://www.peacelanterns.org/what-to-bring--special-needs.html NO DOGS, PLEASE: We recommend not bringing pets, because the event will be so crowded. PLEASE DON'T TAKE OUR PEACE LANTERNS HOME after the event. The lantern bases are time-consuming to produce; we re-use them each year. We photograph the decorated shades for an online gallery, and we'll include yours. (Images of some shades from past years may be found at .) We leave nothing in the water or the park; we pack it all out. Please check our Facebook event page for last-minute announcements.
