Buy local and read local at the 5th annual Chicago Book Expo (chicagobookexpo.org) on Sunday, November 13th, noon-5pm at Columbia College, 1104 S. Wabash. This free celebration of Chicago’s literary community features 20 programs and workshops with local authors, plus 75 exhibitors selling books from local presses and literary organizations. Programs include a kickoff event paying tribute to Roger Ebert, introduced by Chaz Ebert; a panel on Chicago music and books moderated by Jim DeRogatis and featuring Steve Krakow, Sally Timms of the Mekons, and John Dugan; a conversation between activist and educator Bill Ayers (Demand the Impossible!) and community organizer James Thindwa, and much more. Presenting authors include Bill Savage, Neil Steinberg, Eve Ewing, Angela Jackson, Gina Frangello, Alison Flowers, Dominic Pacyga, Toni Nealie, Shawn Shiflett, Marnie Galloway, Gint Aras, Kate Hannigan, Scott Roberts, Jay Bonansinga, Jody Lynn Nye, and many more. All programs are free and open to the public; advance registration is not required.

New this year is a special, all-day program called “So You Want to Be An Author,” a one-day professional development seminar held in partnership with Columbia College’s Career Center. Sessions include novel pitch sessions with agents from major literary agencies (both open mic and one-on-one), as well as programs on submission errors, creating a career as a writer, and more. This special program is organized by Myth-Ink, Columbia College Chicago’s student science fiction, fantasy, and horror writing organization. All sessions are free and open to the public, but some require advance registration to participate; more information about this track can be found at http://mythinkccc.tumblr.com.

Many thanks to our sponsors Columbia College Chicago Creative Writing Department, Poetry Foundation & Poetry Magazine, Ankerwycke Books, Chicago Writers Association, South Side Weekly, CHIRP - Chicago Independent Radio Project, Newcity, and Chicago Book Review.

Liberation Library can't make it today, so Big Shoulders Books is now at Table 17: "The goal of Big Shoulders Books is to disseminate, free of charge, quality works of writing by and about Chicagoans whose voices might not otherwise be shared. Each year, we aim to make small but meaningful contributions to discussions of injustice and inequality in Chicago. Big Shoulders Books celebrates the tremendous resilience and creativity found in all areas of the city."

If you're coming to the Expo, Open Books is having a book drive at the event, so it's a great time to clear off your shelves (to make room for new books!) and donate your used books to benefit their literacy organizations.

You're the birthday boy! Let's run it by Daniel though because the kids may go Lord of Flies on him by then.
